Nerja

Nerja is a lovely seaside town, about 35 miles to the east of Málaga (40 minutes by motorway). The vast majority of the buildings are low-rise, helping it to maintain its charm.

Nerja enjoys one of the best climates in Europe and is therefore an ideal year-round resort, with mild winters and generally blue, sunny skies. The resort does not close for the winter! Sunbeds are always available on the beach and there are usually plenty of people in the sea on Christmas Day!

Nerja has been described as "the jewel in the crown of the Costa del Sol".

Despite its cosmopolitan population, it still retains its Spanish feeling and has not sold out to mass tourism in the way that so many other resorts have along the Costa del Sol. It nestles unobtrusively among the foothills of the Almijara mountains and a relatively unspoilt coastline boasting many attractive beaches and coves. The focal point for the town is the "Balcón de Europa" where people meet for a chat, a drink or just a gentle stroll.

Local activities

These include golf (two courses within a half hour drive), tennis, padel, water sports, scuba diving (in a PADI registered school), walking and horse-riding.

There is a bustling market every Tuesday and the famous Nerja caves are well worth a visit.

Further afield are Granada, Ronda and Málaga.

Beaches

Nerja has five or six beaches, the largest of which is Burriana. You might also like to explore the quieter coves and beaches east of the town heading out towards Almuñecar.

Shopping

Supermarkets

Apart from the small supermarket in the San Juan development there are several others in town. Nearby are Mercadona, Carrefour and Iranzo, in the centre of town is another Mercadona (where the locals shop) and on the other side of Nerja are Mas and another Carrefour. There is also a massive hypermarket complex just off the motorway back towards Málaga (exit 272) with many shops and a huge supermarket called Eroski.

Restaurants

Much of course depends on personal preference, but we list below some favourites. Several restaurants offer a Menú del Día a which is excellent value for a three-course meal, usually with wine and bread included. In the centre of town you will find a whole array of restaurants to suit every taste and around the San Juan pool you will find several restaurants catering for families. La Parra restaurant ( on the left as you drive into the urbanisation) is Spanish-run and very good value. For that special meal out in the centre of Nerja, you could try Botanic, Unico or Restaurante 34.

For the most famous paella in Nerja go to Ayo at the far end of Burriana beach. Not the best paella but excellent atmosphere and cheap

Also on Burriana beach, la Barca is very good.
